We know. A laptop is definitely a writer’s best friend. And by writer, I mean any occupation that deals with words. So I’m also talking to you bloggers, copywriters, journalists, and even students.
You might be a full-time writer who yearns for a laptop that can give you the most comfortable working experience while you tap away for hours and hours.
You might’ve chosen the freelancing path so you can work wherever you are – out on the road. Or perhaps, you’re a travel blogger…
…in that case, what you need is a laptop that’s lightweight without sacrificing the most important features for writers such as long battery life and eye protection features means Best Laptop for Writers.
As a writer myself, I know the struggle.
From endlessly browsing through physical and online stores and feeling lost as you try to choose – (a laptop is certainly not a cheap buy) – so you want to be super sure…to weighing what feature is most essential and what to sacrifice – because you just can’t seem to find a laptop that has everything you need in one place.
That’s why I’ve decided to list down 10 of the best laptops for writers to reduce the anxiety-laden laptop-shopping most writers face.
And if I’m not mistaken…
Most writers are wordsmiths, and not technical people and that makes it much harder to shop. Most people believe that all you need is a light machine with a simple word processor, a browser, and a keyboard. Nothing more.
You should also consider the quality of the keyboard that you’ll be touching for about 6 to 12 hours a day (is it satisfying and light?), the features of the screen such as its sharpness, and eye protection features (does it hurt your eye?), storage (can it store all your files away safely?), graphics, and weight (is it lightweight enough to carry in your bag for travels and remote work?).
And that’s what we’re going to talk about in this roundup article along with everything you need to know before buying your writer’s laptop.
And to spare you the trouble…
We’ve tried and tested all the products in this article. Some of them I’ve already used in the past but most were ordered just for his test.
We gasped in surprise at some and shaken our heads in dismay at others. We’ve found some handy hacks, and I’d like to share them all with you.
In this article, we’ll be taking a look at:
- Different types of laptops
- What makes a great writer’s laptop?
- Features and functions to look out for
- The most popular laptops for writers and how they performed
- Tips, hacks, and more…
So if you’re all set to know and get the right laptop for you, then let’s not keep you waiting.
Without further ado…
Let’s dive right in.
Best High Resolution Laptop For Writers
1 – Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop
- Very lightweight
- Can be used in Windows 10 S mode for a more secure browsing
- With IPS panel for good viewing angle wherever you may be
- Keyboard has backlight
- Highly upgradable with 2 RAM slots
- Also has another slot for another hard drive
- Sharp, crisp, and saturated picture quality
- Comes with a number pad
- 4GB RAM and 128GB M.2 SSD can only accommodate lighter tasks and programs
- The touchpad is a little flimsy
Wonder why this baby remains the bestselling laptop on Amazon?
Well, you’re not the only one. Many people wonder too, including me.
That’s before I finally got this in the mail.
Good audio and visual? Upgradability? Ease of use, portability?
Would you believe that all of these are in this approachable little machine?
Honestly, like most of its users, I didn’t expect much. Why, with its price point which goes around $300 (it changes from time to time so watch out), I’d be happy to get a machine that’d let me open my word processor and browser.
But surprise, surprise.
Let me tell you now. This little thing is more than meets the eye.
At around 3 pounds, this laptop scores perfectly in portability. I can just easily slip it through my backpack and carry it the whole day without realizing it’s there. Quite comparable with a Macbook Air.
And while I’m on it, the components and hinges are thankfully quite well-crafted too, without any loose parts so it felt like it’ll be able to endure wear and tear especially whenever I slip this into my (usually busy) bag.
So what makes it great for writers?
With its Ryzen 3 3200U processor and 4GB RAM, it’ll be able to handle all your basic tasks including internet browsing, word processing, spreadsheets, and even video streaming, and light gaming.
Yes, games, too!
But don’t expect it to handle something like Call of Duty. Lighter and older games will do. But hey, we’re talking about laptops for working so it’s just a bonus, really.
Now let’s go to the visuals because I still can’t get over it.
This 15.6 inches full HD display uses an IPS panel, which came as a big surprise, not only for me but surely for most of its new users.
In case you don’t know…
IPS, or in-plane switching, can be found mostly on higher-end laptops as laptops in this price range usually use TN panels.
What IPS does is give you the best viewing angles wherever you may be in the room. So even if you’re viewing the screen from the side, the image won’t look inversed or weird. It’ll just look as if you’re sitting in front of the screen.
For its price point, it’s kind of crazy, right? (not complaining, though)
Audio-wise, it’s alright. It uses its very own TrueHarmony for a more emphasized bass and clearer sounds, though I didn’t really notice a big difference. It’s still nice to know.
The keypad felt natural with just the lightest clickity-clack sound, which I personally prefer just because it sounds so damn satisfying.
But you know what’s cooler?
Not only has this laptop’s keyboard features a backlight but also a Num pad!
The backlight turns off after a few seconds of being idle, which may annoy some of you, but for me, it’s just right not to disturb me whenever I’m watching on Netflix and trying to relax.
Now here’s the best part…
…at least for me. It’s the Acer Aspire 5 Slim’s upgradability.
It’s not every day you encounter a very cheap laptop with cool upgradeable features.
I’m talking about the 2 RAM slots and another empty slot for an internal hard drive in case you want to upgrade the memory and storage of your laptop!
It also comes with an HDMI port, USB 3.1 and USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port, and an audio jack.
I’m sure it doesn’t end here. There’s so much that this little thing can offer that it’s honestly really impressive.
Aside from the touchpad that seemed to slightly move whenever my fingers went heavy, everything felt comfortable and natural while using it.
For this, it shouldn’t be surprising that this laptop is our roundup’s Editor’s Choice awardee, because, honestly, if I could pick just one laptop that I’ll bring with me to my travels, this most probably would be it.
Best Budget Laptop Table
2 – ASUS Chromebook C202 Laptop
- Very lightweight at 2.65 lbs
- Ruggedized construction that can withstand bumps and drop up to 3.9 feet
- With built-in antivirus
- Integrated Google apps
- Spill-proof keyboard
- 180-degree hinges
- Graphics could be better, not really suitable for movie-viewing
- Dark letters on the keyboards make it hard to see in low light
Looking for a robust laptop that can go well with the most demanding lifestyle?
A ruggedized laptop is made to withstand use and abuse in any condition, may it be wet or dusty, and is made with a housing that’s stronger and thicker than a regular laptop’s.
Ruggedized laptops are used for industrial, construction, and military purposes!
And this is what exactly ASUS served me with this Chromebook.
Aside from its ruggedized construction, it also features a spill-proof keyboard with reinforced rubber guards, and easy-grip handles.
Actually, looking at this, I figured this was made for children and I wasn’t wrong.
Turned out, this is the most recommended laptop for young students and moody toddlers because it’s so robust that you can even drop it up to 3.9 feet and it won’t break and it’ll stay running well.
But of course, you wouldn’t intentionally drop your Chromebook, would you?
And anyway, with its airy 2.65 pounds weight, it’s also almost impossible to drop this.
Super lightweight, this is the basic Chromebook that traveling writers will be able to benefit from.
And before I forget…
It also features 180-degree hinges so no chance of breaking even if your child happens to play around with the screen.
Graphic-wise, just like most Chromebooks, you really can’t expect something like ultra-HD picture quality with this. It may even appear washed out and grainy at times but anyway, I was looking to use this for sudden outdoor uses, like writing in a cafe for a change of scenery or remote work so that’s not really a big deal for me.
The keyboard has these dark bluish letters that are hard to see in low light so that’s quite of a bummer.
But what I love the most…
…is the ease of use with which I was able to utilize my Google apps.
I live mostly online, using Google Docs, Sheets, and whatnots, and if you’re like me, you’ll love how this Chrome OS makes using them even more seamless, way easier than, say in a Macbook Air or regular laptops.
And it doesn’t end here.
Because it’s a Chromebook, expect top-notch security, too. Your files are automatically backed up, and browsing, among other tasks, is perfectly secured with a built-in antivirus.
11.6 inches with 4GB RAM and 16GB flash storage, this is a great Chromebook for writers who like to work in different places.
And as a cherry on top…
…this comes for less than a couple hundred bucks. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just a regular Chromebook. But it’s a ruggedized, waterproof, shockproof Chromebook, so that’s an ultimate steal.
This makes this ASUS Chromebook C202 laptop our Best Value awardee.
splay Laptop For Writers
3 – Apple MacBook Pro with Intel Processor
- Features a magic keyboard that makes type faster, easier, and quieter
- Large storage and memory
- The Brilliant Retina Display with True Tone technology makes for an epic viewing experience
- Shorter battery life
- Screen resolution might be too much for everyday use
If it’s divine screen resolution and huge storage you’re after, then you’ll be glad to know that this is the Macbook Pro 13’s specialty.
With its 1TB SSD storage, you don’t only get to store simple writing files but also install tools and programs you need to take your craft to the next level.
It also boasts not only 16GB RAM but also a 10th generation quad-core Intel i5 processor so you can now use any programs as you like and multiple browser tabs won’t be a problem anymore.
But what’s cooler…
…is the upgrade Apple gave this Macbook’s keyboard.
As opposed to the controversial butterfly keyboard that plagued Macbook Air uses in the past year, Apple now says goodbye to the butterfly with this Macbook Pro 13’s magic keyboard.
I won’t go super technical here so let me just say that this keyboard’s refined scissor mechanism with 1mm of travel takes writing and typing to a whole new level.
This makes this keyboard very responsive, comfortable, and very quiet, with rubber domes underneath the caps for hat subtle bounce we all love.
….if you’re someone who loves that loud clicking sound of chunky and tall keys, then you might not like this keyboard’s streamlined design.
And the best thing about it?
Well, it has a backlight and that’s what matters.
Aside from the backlight, it also boasts of a Touch Bar that features the most important powerful shortcuts for faster and more efficient writing.
And to maximize efficiency and comfort, even more, it also has these inverted-T arrow keys that you can use in navigating through any gameplay or spreadsheet in a blink.
Now let’s go to graphics and screen resolution because it’s superb.
This Macbook Pro 13 has a Retina display with True Tone Technology that features 25% more colors than sRGB, 500 nits brightness, lending it a resolution bordering between HD and 4000k.
Can you believe that?
This otherworldly resolution and keyboard comfortability urged me to drop a perfect 10 for the screen resolution metric, making this laptop this roundup’s Top Pick awardee.
This makes the laptop perfect not only for regular writers but also business-minded ones.
With a Macbook of this caliber, you don’t only get to write and store articles but do some photo and video editing, as well, thanks to its flawless graphics.
When it comes to battery life…
…that’s where we let out a huge sigh.
Using it for a week, I’ve noticed that the device got hot easily and the battery lasted for 4-5 hours at most (mostly 4 hours.) so that’s quite disappointing. But considering its staggering screen resolution, I’m not surprised.
The Macbook Pro 13 weighs 3 lbs with a posh space gray exterior so you’re not only writing in style but in comfort, too.
Best Touch Screen Laptop For Writers
4 – ASUS Chromebook Flip C302 2-In-1 Laptop
- With 360-degree hinges that let you turn your laptop into a table
- IPS panel with 1080p resolution for crisp graphics
- Lets you access the Google Play Store and use Android Apps
- Backlit keyboard
- 10 hours of battery life is not a joke
- With built-in antivirus
- Compact and solid design
- Very few ports
I’m sure you’ll agree, there’s a kind of satisfaction only a touchscreen could only provide.
That may be the reason for the rise of 2-in-1 laptops in the past few years.
In case you’re still wondering…
A 2-in-1 laptop is basically a device that has the features of both a laptop and a tablet.
How is this possible?
Well, you can say thanks to flippable laptops with 260-degree hinges.
Yes, you read that right.
And this is the highlight feature of the ASUS Chromebook Flip C302 2-in-1 Laptop.
It flips around like a swiss knife so you can use the other part as a stand or for a tent mode, leaving you with a 12.5” tablet.
But apart from its 360-degree hinges, it’s also great if you love crisp and bright graphics because this Chromebook features an IPS panel with 1080p resolution.
But what’s cooler…
…is the backlit keyboard! It utilizes the regular scissor mechanism with just the right bounce and feels that’s not annoying for any type of writer while the touchpad has this glassy smoothness in it that enables my fingers to glide without interruption.
This flippable ‘tap also supports ARC++, meaning, you have access to thousands of amazing android apps on Google Play.
Now we’re talking.
I’ve tried and was able to use Skype and Spotify on my Chromebook.
But be warned.
I’ve also found out that not all Android apps can run on this laptop but that’s okay because I can always use the online tools available.
Its specs boast of 10-11 hours of battery life, I had my doubts because I’ve encountered more than a few devices claiming to last for over 10 hours when in fact, they can only work for about 4 hours.
But lo and behold!
I was able to use this Chromebook for 10 hours straight without even realizing it.
Now that’s really impressive.
Ever minimalistic in its design, it features only a few ports, including an audio jack, USB-C ports, and a Micro SD expansion slot.
To tell you the truth…
I’ve expected this to be flimsy and wobbly like most cheap 2-in-1 laptops. A trade-off for the amazing flippable feature sounds fair.
But surprisingly, it felt very solid and compact and didn’t wobble even when I was typing aggressively away.
Now I’m not surprised why it’s considered the best Chromebook in the market today.
Best Fast Processor Laptop For Writers
5 – Acer Chromebook R 11 Convertible
- Convertible with a 360-degree hinge
- IPS 1080p screen resolution for greater viewing angle
- Comfortable keyboard with an on-screen handwriting mode
- Lets you access Google Play Store and Android apps
- Battery lasts up to 4-5 hours only
Sometimes, less is more. And that’s what this Acer Chromebook R 11 Convertible embodies.
With a cool denim white exterior, it sure is a sight to behold.
Its chassis is mostly made of plastic but Acer made up for it by including a sturdy metal top on its top cover. All of these are coated in a beautiful matte white.
The visual treat goes beyond the exterior because its 11.6-inch screen also looked quite attractive with its glossy appearance. But there are people who don’t like shiny screens so if you’re one of them, then you can go look for another Chromebook, instead.
But worry not…
Because this convertible laptop also features a Zero Air Gap technology that’s responsible for reducing reflections from the sunlight or artificial light so the graphics stay crisp and bright.
It didn’t hurt that it also has an IPS panel that further contributed to the laptop’s top-notch visuals.
But let’s go to the highlight of this product…
…which is the convertible function. Just like the earlier Chromebook, this one utilizes 360-degree hinges, as well so you can enjoy your laptop not only in 2 modes but 4!
- Notebook mode- fully functional with a keypad
- Display mode- You can bring the screen closer for a sharpie, crisper entertainment experience
- Tent mode- You can use this whenever you have limited space, such as in an airplane or your kitchen counter
- Tablet- For people who just love the touchscreen function
I’d say the tablet mode came really useful for reading articles and documents, although it can be a little heavy for a tablet, I’m certainly not complaining!
Powered by Intel Celeron N3150 and 4GB DDR3L, browsing and doing tasks in this laptop is not as smooth and as seamless as more expensive laptops. Watching high-definition videos did take time and even lagged sometimes, but considering that we’re talking about the best laptops for writers, graphics shouldn’t be that much of a big deal.
Not for me, at least.
But that wasn’t the case when I was working with Google apps. I expected typing to be slow in response when I was in Google Doc but it’s surprisingly fast and that made up for the lagging with video streaming. It’s actually very fast when dealing with paper works and office suites.
The keyboard was alright. Not so tall and not so low with just the right clicking sound and fast travel time, which I appreciate.
On the other hand…
The touchpad wasn’t as entertaining as it felt somewhat spongey with much longer travel time.
The tablet mode also has a handwriting mode, in case you don’t feel like typing through the on-screen keyboard and I must say it’s accurate and detected my handwritten words perfectly, so that’s a plus!
This convertible 2-in-1 laptop also has a webcam, ports for 3.0 and 2.0 USB, audio jack, and a full-sized SD card slot that’s fully insertable so you can keep your card inside flush with the laptop’s surface.
Battery-wise, it’s not very outstanding. The unit ran out of battery just after 4hours of use (5 hours at most sometimes).
Despite its shortcomings, if you’re looking for a perfectly portable laptop that you can bring anywhere and adjust according to the situation you’re in, and work articles with, then this could be a great choice.
Best Long Battery Life Laptop For Writers
6 – Apple MacBook Pro 15in Core i7
- Sleek and slim
- Long battery life
- Can take more programs and browser tabs running at the same time without slowing down
- Very light and quiet keyboard
- Not very lightweight
Fancy getting a Macbook Pro but frugality gets in the way every time?
I get you. There are times that I, too, think that I can get a more premium laptop with the price I’d pay for a regular Macbook.
But there’s no denying it…
…that when it comes to fast performance and efficient functions, Apple does it best.
That’s why I was very surprised and delighted when I learned of the Amazon Renewed store.
And sure enough, I saw their latest offer which is a Macbook Pro, and who am I to resist?
What I got is an Apple MacBook Pro 15in Core i7 that’s been professionally renewed by Amazon-qualified suppliers. Sounds intriguing, yes?
Not surprisingly, it has the usually sophisticated elegance that characterizes most of Apple’s Macbooks. Sleek and slim, it’s as iconic as it can be.
Powered by its Intel core i7 processor, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3L SDRAM, 512GB Flash Storage Solid State Drive, it felt like using an entry-level Macbook.
… it proved to be a fighter especially when I deliberately opened one too many browser tabs with the music player and Discord running in the background and it didn’t slow down a bit.
Now if you’re using this for writing tasks, it’ll surely be heavenly.
The keyboard was alright with 0.6 millimeters of travel. It’s actually very light, too light for my liking so if you fancy a quiet and barely-there keyboard, you’ll love this one
…the keyboard has a backlight and that’s all that mattered to me.
But the battery life is really where it’s at.
Amazon advertised it as having 8 hours of battery life. That’s false.
Because I was able to use mine for about 9 hours.
Can you believe that?
Weighing over 4 pounds, it’s still quite handy but not as handy as the other lightweights I’ve tested.
Best Advanced Keyboard Writer’s Laptop
7 – Microsoft DAG-00001 Surface Laptop
- Very lightweight at 2 lbs
- Comes with a backlit keyword with 3 brightness levels
- Sensitive precision touchpad
- Attractive and luxurious Alcantara fabric on the keyboard deck
- With 4 colors to choose from
- Very few ports
Getting straight to the cherry on top, this Microsoft Surface Laptop is ideal if keyboard quality is a deal-breaker for you.
With 1.5mm key travel, the Microsoft Surface borders on light to a satisfyingly clicky keyboard, which favors me because I like a little kick whenever I type.
But that’s not the best feature of this keyboard yet.
It doesn’t only have a backlight to aid you in typing at low light settings, but the light is also adjustable with 3 brightness levels!
Now that’s really something!
That alone got me fangirling hard over this Microsoft Surface laptop.
And as if that’s not enough…
… the keyboard deck is covered in luxurious Alcantara fabric that caressed my hands whenever I typed.
No functional reason for it. It’s just very nice, quite warm, and comforting…not to mention it also lends a luxurious look to the laptop.
Aside from the fabric, the Microsoft Surface Laptop also comes in and caressed my hands whenever I typed.
No functional reason for it. Just very nice, quite warm, and comforting… not to mention it also lends a luxurious look to the laptop.
Aside from Platinum, it also comes in 3 other stunning shades namely burgundy, cobalt blue, and graphite gold.
Now, this is the laptop fit for the desk of a CEO…or a bestselling writer, maybe?
Weighing only over 2 pounds, you can write and travel in style because it’s super lightweight that I even forgot that I got my laptop with me.
The Microsoft Precision Touchpad was also seamless and flawless with just the right amount of sensitivity.
My only complaint would probably be the very few ports. It only has a USB 3.0, a mini display port, and an audio jack.
Best Fast Performance Laptop For Writers
8 – Lenovo Chromebook Duet
- One of the lightest Chromebooks in the market
- The keyboard is detachable so you can enjoy it in tablet mode
- With a built-in antivirus
- Boots up in less than a minute
- Long battery life
- It only has a USB-C port
If an instant and speedy boot-up for outside usage are what you’re looking for, this Chromebook Duet from Lenovo might be your lifesaver.
Boot-up took me more or less than 1 minute and after a couple of months of use, it still didn’t slow down and just stayed the same.
And the fact that the 10.1” screen can be detached from the little keyboard, turning it into a tablet just established its position as my go-to instant laptop for trips outside.
I’m talking about doing revisions on a cafe after doing groceries, quick email check while on a trip, or doing emergency tasks while on a vacation.
While it’s certainly not a replacement for my main laptop for work, it sure is very useful for when I want to take my work somewhere other than the office.
The detachable keyboard is a little tiny and cramped, even to my small hands, and the same goes for the touchpad. But to be fair, it’s sensitive and smooth to the touch, reminiscent of the Lenovo Ideapad that many people loved.
The only disappointment in this unit…
…might just be the number of ports (again). You only get one USB-C port and nothing more.
With a weight of less than 1 pound for the tablet, you get to enjoy the perfect portability may it be on your trips or while lying on your bed and watching movies.
The battery was fine. It lasted for a couple of days and it still had about 50% left after.
Like most Chromebooks…
…it also has a built-in anti-virus and overall excellent security and that’s a huge plus point for me as someone who keeps lots of files.
Speaking of files, this device lets you have a one-year registration to Google One, granting the user 100GB storage.
Now that’s a steal.
Best Lightweight Laptop For Writers
9 – HP ENVY 13-ab016nr Laptop
- Encased in a mainly metal chassis
- With 3 USB ports, HDMI and micro SD card slot
- Good screen quality and resolution
- Can take on heavier programs such as Photoshop and illustrator
- Sustainable battery
- The touchpad is a little too sensitive
Having a lightweight laptop shouldn’t mean that you’ll have to sacrifice functionality and efficiency.
If you’re thinking you can’t have a laptop on the go that can run heavier programs, then think again.
With its 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD, the EP ENVY will surely the subject of envy among your squad!
If you’re not just a writer but an illustrator and editor, too, then you’ll love this monster that can run heavier programs such as Photoshop and illustrator.
That being said…
…if you’re using this laptop for writing and paperwork only, expect a top-notch performance that doesn’t slow down one bit.
The keyboard is okay-ish. Nothing special but nothing annoying, as well. Although there’s something to be said about the touchpad.
Seems like the touchpad had gone overboard with sensitivity as it tended to make inaccurate clicks here and there, but the material itself was glassy and smooth.
Some users reported a loud sound coming from the fan but I didn’t hear any fan sound, loud or hushed.
Another thing that makes this model one of the best laptops for writers is its generous set of ports.
It has not just one but 3 USB ports (one USB-C and two USB 3.1 along with the headphone jack, micro SD card, and HDMI.
Screen resolution was simply divine and bright. I was able to use this under the sun thanks to its UWVA technology that adjusts the brightness and holds its ground.
The battery was quite great as well. Although I’m yet to experience the advertised 14-hour battery life, it lasted me 10 hours at most when doing only lighter tasks such as writing and editing.
With very minimal plastic in this unit, it’s mainly encased in solid metal, not only giving it good protection but also mimicking the sleek look and build Macbooks have. ts and holds the quality and brig
Best Laptop For Writers Under $1000
10 – Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Laptop Computer
- Heavyweight and can run heavier and stronger programs simultaneously
- A generous set of ports
- Keyboard with backlight
- Fast performance that doesn’t slow down or freeze
- Might be too heavy for a laptop
If you don’t care too much about aesthetics and visuals and only want an industrious best friend that will allow you to take your whole office with you, then you might want to take a good look at this 15-inch Inspiron 5000 model from Dell.
The casing isn’t impressively compact but it’s not too flimsy as well. The solid black bezel is way too thick and that’s why I said this is perfect if you don’t care about aesthetics that much/
But to make up for it…
The performance itself was seamless, snappy, and smooth.
Powered by the 8th gen Intel Core i7 855ou processor and quad core eight-way processing performance, I was able to use my photo and video editing programs including the heavyweight Photoshop, and even play some games, albeit in low quality.
It didn’t slow down or froze on me even when I left Photoshop, YouTube, and some multiple tabs open for a few hours.
Now that’s a feat.
The keyboard is regular with nothing special except for- you’ve guessed it- backlight.
Although it boasts of a 1920 x 1080 full HD display, the colors were not ultra-crisp and saturated but still above average so it’s still alright.
But man, ports were generous.
It features two USB 3.1 ports, one USB 2.0, an audio jack, and HDMI. It also has a webcam that you can use for video conferences and meetings with an excellent built-in mic.
Storage was pretty impressive, too. Aside from the 1TB + 128GB SSD dual-drive, it also boasts of 1TB HHD for additional built-in memory, and it can certainly be felt by its faultless run and performance.
Just like I said, it’s like bringing your whole office wherever you go.
For a 15-inch laptop, a 4 lbs weight is kind of heavy but hey, if you’re looking for a device to do all your tasks in one place, the weight may just be really worth it.

How To Choose Best Laptop For Writers
What are the different types of laptops?
Today, laptops don’t come with uniform specifications and build. There are laptops made for specific kinds of industry, situations, and conditions. Below are just a few of the many kinds of laptops being products today.
- Writing laptop
- Traditional laptop
- 2-IN-1/ Convertible
- Desktop replacement
- Rugged laptop
- Business Laptop
Features to look out for
Laptops became popular initially because of their portability. Imagine carrying your desktop with you?
If you love going places and enjoying while bringing your work with you, lightweight laptops with smaller screens such as 12 to 13 inches sizes will be your best bet.
As I’ve said, laptops are mostly meant to be used outside of your home, so a good and long-lasting battery is also paramount.
You can choose between the classic hard drive or the more advanced solid state drives. The more storage your laptop has, the less chances it’ll slow down because it can accommodate the number of programs you’re putting in.
Product and specifications explained
Random Access Memory or RAM refers to the power with which your laptop is able to multitask and run a multitude of programs all at once. The more RAM you have, the faster your laptop will perform. 4GB RAM is the bare minimum and anything below that would cause a lot of freezing and lagging.
Just like what we’re taught in school, the CPU is the heart of your computer and it remains so with laptops. You can never go wrong with Intel’s Core-based range. Core i3 can usually found in entry-level laptops while i7 remains the most advanced today.
Laptops have different ports such as HDMI, audio jack, and USB ports. Today there is more than one USB port such as the USB 3.1 and USB 2.0.
- GPU- Graphics Processing Unit, refers to the quality of the laptops, well, graphics, including images and videos.
- Cloud- It is a network of servers that allow you to work and store files online instead of on your own computer
- Bandwidth- Measured in bits per second (bps), it refers to the amount of data that can be sent through a network such as your modem.
- Anti-virus- It’s a program that protects your computer from malware and viruses
- HDD- It’s the laptop’s hard disk drive with rotating disks
SSD- This is another type of hard drive that doesn’t use any moving parts and could come as pretty expensive

People who care about their laptop’s aesthetics, solid and compact build, and seamless performance opt for Macbooks. But if you want to do more with your laptop, such as gaming, with more hardware choices, then you’re better off getting a Windows model.
3. What does a 2-in-1 laptop mean?
A 2-in-1 laptop is simply a laptop that can be converted to a tablet. Some laptops do this by having 360-degree hinges while some have detachable keyboards.
4. Which laptop has the best keyboard for typing?
Based on my tests, the laptop with a keyboard that really stood out from the rest was the Microsoft Surface Laptop. Not only has the keyboard have shorter travel but also 3 adjustable brightness levels for its backlight.
Our Analysis, Comparisons & Test Results
We’ve been through it all, from analyzing the laptops’ structures to watching movies to test it out to unscrewing them and studying the compositions.
I’ve also set five different metrics based on what most buyers look out for (and so should you) when buying a new laptop.
Below are the fruits of these tests. Read on and take your pic.
1. Value for Money
Is the product worthy of your hard-earned cash? Does it give more than what its price promised or less?
Sometimes, it’s not the price that matters but the value that comes with it. For this roundup, 3 laptops score a perfect 10 for bringing more than what the specs promised.
2. Rating Keyboard Comfortability
The keyboard is one of the most-used components of a laptop…much so if you’re a writer, journalist, or student. That’s why finding a comfortable keyboard that will still feel good and satisfying after long hours of typing is imperative, especially to writers. The keyboard’s bounciness and sounds are personal preferences so the next thing to consider is if the laptop has a backlight to let you see in low light conditions.
3. Battery Life
Laptops are mostly meant to be used for working or enjoying entertainment far from home. That’s why battery life is one of the most important factors to look out for. Some laptops claim to last for over 10 hours, but only a few can really last that long even after video-watching and running many programs.
4. Screen Resolution
For writers, screen resolution wouldn’t matter that much. But there’s two things why I opted to include it in the metrics. (1.) Most writers also do some image and video designing and (2.) Who wouldn’t want to play after work? Surely, all of us can benefit in a crisp and clear picture.
I would know. Writers love going places, too. Especially when the four corners of the room or office feel too monotonous. Most writers also chose that occupation so they can travel while keeping their jobs. That’s why we included portability among the metrics. You’ll be lugging your laptop around and it should be lightweight enough not to strain those precious shoulders and back.
Our Final Verdict:
Best Laptop For Writers
Metrics don. Now it’s time to see what laptop has excelled in almost all important factors. I’m sure you’ve guessed it by now.
The Acer Aspire 5 Slim Laptop takes the trophy with an almost perfect score. It’s lightweight but not too light as to not run many programs at once. It also has long battery life, as well as portability.
The positions of the Apple laptops may surprise some, but the technological advancements these days are so great that most people (like me!) prefer Windows to Macs any day.
Now let’s read on and compare.
Conclusion: Best Laptop For Writers
A far cry from the earlier laptop models, we’re fortunate to have countless choices that fit our lifestyles today.
While I’ll still prefer the homey feeling of using a chunky desk laptop than can take use and abuse, as well as run many programs at once because I’m too space-headed to remember to close them all, it’s still nice having a lighter backup model that I can take anywhere I go.
Being a writer myself, I know how demanding it can get sometimes. A sudden revision request could go and ruin your holiday if you don’t have the right device with you.
And that’s why I had the urge to do this roundup article, to help you, my fellow wordsmiths, to get the perfect laptop that goes well with your preferences and personality.
What’s your favorite laptop brand? Are you a Mac loyalist or a Windows one?
